The Táin Bó Cúailnge, or “The Cattle Raid of Cooley” survives with two manuscripts from the 12th century. It’s generally set in the first century, and was probably an oral tradition from the fifth or so. I’d like to memorize story-sized episodes of it.

For instance, this past weekend when my daughter asked for a bedtime story, I was able to tell her an abbreviated version of theNaming of Cu Cullain. I’d like to be able to give the story arc for her and then talk about what kind of a kid Setanta was and how he began fighting for Ulster, and then how he died.

Here’s some basic information on the story, here’s the story at Project Gutenberg, and here’s a version over at the bookstore.
